A suspect involved in the kidnapping of a 17-year-old boy from Philadelphia was shot and killed by FBI agents early Wednesday at a home in Bergen County while the teen was found safe, officials said.

FBI agents from field offices in Newark and Philadelphia tracked a suspect to an apartment in northwest Leonia, where a confrontation ensued as agents entered the residence at the Lakeview Apartments, near Grand Avenue, according to authorities.

During the confrontation, a male suspect was shot and killed by agents, the FBI said in a statement. The victim was not hurt and was in the custody of law enforcement, the FBI said.

The FBI said agents along with the Philadelphia Police Department this week were investigating the kidnapping of the boy from Philadelphia.

“All available resources were deployed in an effort to secure his safe return, with investigators developing information indicating he was being held at a location in Leonia, New Jersey,” the FBI said.

“Early this morning, FBI Newark agents responded to that location. During a confrontation, a male suspect was fatally shot. The victim was recovered safely, taken to the hospital for evaluation, and released,” the bureau said in a statement.

A Philadelphia police spokesman confirmed the incident began with the investigation of a Tuesday kidnapping, but referred further questions to the FBI. Officials at the FBI would not release more details.

Authorities did not disclose the name of the suspect who was killed or provide additional details on the kidnapping and the circumstances surrounding the shooting. The FBI’s Inspection Division was investigating the shooting, which is bureau protocol, the agency said.

News video showed dozens of law enforcement officers gathered at the scene, which was roped off with yellow tape.

Leonia Mayor Judah Zeigler said the shooting was out of character for the quiet, closely-knit borough.

“Everybody thinks nothing happens in Leonia, but the reality is things happen everywhere,” Zeigler said. “We’re absolutely thrilled that the victim was recovered and is unharmed.”
